Edinburgh Fringe 2025 Reviews – Dead Air, Call Me Crazy, Kanpur: 1857, The Unstoppable Rise of Ben Manager, and Chloe Petts: Big Naturals

Dead Air, Pleasance Courtyard.Grief affects us in many ways. Imagine you didn’t come to see your dying father in the hospital – how can you ever overcome the regret? No problem, use the new AI Air Service tool to keep in touch with loved ones beyond the grave with their varied helpful subscription services! Alfrun Rose’s one-woman show retraces the steps of her problematic relationships with her mother, her mother’s new partner and her own on-off boyfriend. But when the only person who can really give the support she needs is dead – she just has to rely on this new big business model to maintain that relationship. It’s a beautifully, touchingly written play, full of light and shade, giving all the characters in Alfie’s story their own voice and perspective. It’s also full of irresistibly funny moments of dark comedy, mixed with powerful emotions. A superb tour-de-force that keeps you riveted throughout. Hugely entertaining. 5 stars.

Call Me Crazy, Greenside @ Riddles Court.4-starsOlivia attends yet another clinic, trying to put a number to her level of pain – but will the doctors even believe her if she does? This hard-hitting intense monologue charts Olivia’s young life from her early days where she tried so hard to become invisible, and succeeded to today where she needs to be seen again and discover an identity for herself and the cause for all her pain. A fascinating insight into a woman’s struggle with the medical profession and the formative memories that led her to where she is now. Sharply written and powerfully acted by Olivia Ormond. 4 stars.

Kanpur: 1857, Pleasance Courtyard.3-starsAn Indian rebel is forced to tell their story before an audience before being strapped to a cannon as a punishment for their part in the Kanpur rebellion. But if they reveal the group’s secrets and the whereabouts of the rebel leader, they might go free. At first you think this will be a simply structured play, with the rebel telling their story – but when a British officer interrupts them and tries to direct their performance, things take a turn for the surreal. The unusual structure cleverly emphasises the imbalance of power, and it’s a powerful play, although it sometimes feels a little heavy and not always easy to follow. Perhaps lacking a sense of menace, it’s nevertheless well acted and includes an exquisite tabla performance by Sodhi. 3 stars.

The Unstoppable Rise of Ben Manager, Pleasance Courtyard.A supremely bizarre production – ostensibly, it’s a satire on generic management and asks the question, what do big successful managers do all day; and on the other hand it’s a fantasy idea allowed to run riot. A wannabe employee fakes an interview and blags an executive job – and then finds he has nothing to do all day, but at least he does it with pizzazz, so gets noticed and then gets continuously promoted beyond all his ability – not that he needs any ability to do nothing. It’s an interesting idea but it runs out of steam very quickly and becomes very repetitive and rather childish. Energetically performed, but that’s not enough to save it. Not for me. 2 stars.

Chloe Petts: Big Naturals, Pleasance Courtyard.4-starsThere’s always an air of expectation at a Chloe Petts gig – she’s rapidly becoming a bit of a national treasure. Her latest show, Big Naturals, is named in honour of what she most likes in life – cue some delightful reminiscences about Page 3 Girls and the journalistic high notes set by the likes of the Sun and the Mirror. At the heart of the show is her affiliation with the lad culture of her formative years and the debt she owes Kasabian. Lots of deliciously clever callbacks and an abundance of laughs and comic observations. Chloe Petts can always be relied on to deliver fantastic material, and Big Naturals does exactly that. 4 stars.

Edinburgh Fringe 2024 Reviews – Tim Biglowe: Grease Monkey, Gang Bang, Emma Sidi is Sue Gray, Chloe Petts: How You See Me How You Don’t, Nina Gilligan: Goldfish, and Finlay Christie: I Deserve This

Tim Biglowe: Grease Monkey, PBH’s Free Fringe at Whistlebinkies.

What’s the proper name for a sell-out show that’s free? A free-out? That was the case for our performance of Tim Bigelow’s new show Grease Monkey. Trying to define his inner “bloke”, he tells us all about being brought up in Wimbourne, moving to London, and then finding his inner PartyBoy in Berlin. But now he’s a mature married man, he has to find a proper job and what could be more blokey than working as a mechanic? But is he the ideal fit for the role? You’ll have to see his show to find out! Tim Bigelow has an enormously welcoming and inclusive style, with lots of terrific material and a fluid, confident delivery. The show is pitched perfectly to the – out of necessity – intimate audience set-up. And it has a very clever and engaging finale which is just about as blokey as you can get. A name to watch out for in the future!

Gang Bang, Pleasance Courtyard.

A Mafiosa family escape from America and end up in Blackpool – it’s an easy mistake. But when Godfather Don Lambrini croaks, he passes on the boss mantle to the unlikely Al, much to the fury of his heir apparent. But Al is a blunderer more than a murderer, and mayhem ensues. It’s a ridiculous idea and the script is full of ridiculous humour; a mixture of surreal, slapstick and the downright silly. There are lots of amusing characterisations and humour derived from the show’s deliberately unlikely locations. The play could be trimmed down a little, and does begin to run out of steam towards the end, but I found the performers and the laughs very endearing, and, frankly, I loved it.

Emma Sidi is Sue Gray, Pleasance Courtyard.

Not sure I knew quite what to expect from this hour of character comedy but Emma Sidi’s caracterizacion (Spanish – it will make sense if you see it) of Sue Gray is creative genius. I’m not going to tell you more about her portrayal because the surprise is very much part of the appeal of the show. We learn about Sue’s previous posts in the Civil Service, the ministers she likes, the ministers she doesn’t; what she really thinks about Sir Keir Starmer and what happens at the office water cooler. There is some audience participation, brilliantly set up and which adds an inspirational level of comedy. Exactly what the Fringe is all about – I laughed from start to finish!

Chloe Petts: How You See Me How You Don’t, Pleasance Courtyard.

It must be miserable to be trolled online simply for being who you are and what you look like; and that was an experience that Chloe Petts unexpectedly found herself facing. But she has turned that experience into a great new show, which encompasses her appearances on Sky Sports News, her schooldays with best friend Britney and the pitfalls and pleasures of using the Clarks foot measuring appliance. She has a superbly confident and likeable style and delivers her sharp and pinpoint accurate comic observations with immaculate timing and star quality. A must-see!

Nina Gilligan: Goldfish, Just the Tonic Nucleus.

Nina Gilligan’s new show Goldfish is, as always, full of hilarious observations about life from the viewpoint of a menopausal woman, including the sexual apartheid practised by GPs, fancying men under 30, and still being subjected to a mental mother. But there’s also a serious side to the show, with her health issues and an account of a sexual assault at a Corporate Event. So there’s a sweet and sour aspect to this show; although one’s main memory at the end of it is a live goldfish singing on stage with backing bubbles. Laughter contrasted with the unwelcome advances of a sexual predator.

Finlay Christie: I Deserve This, Monkey Barrel Comedy 4.

Fast becoming one of our biggest rising stars in comedy, Finlay Christie’s new hour of comedy celebrates being a young cis white male, whilst always poking fun at himself, at his privilege, both in education and money, and his woeful attempts to write rap as a 16-year-old. Exuding confidence, but in a likeable way rather than a Boris Johnson way, he has that marvellous ability to lead an audience down the exact garden path that he chooses, and can hold our attention even through silence – which is always the sign of a tremendous comedian. It takes a very skilful comic to present a sequence explaining mansplaining without infuriating the women in the audience – and he gets away with it beautifully. Great crowd work, superbly self-deprecating and, above all, extremely funny.

The Edinburgh Fringe All Month Long – 11th August 2024

A comedy-heavy day today, but what is on the slab?

Here’s the schedule for August 11th.

11:15 –  Tim Biglowe: Grease Monkey, PBH’s Free Fringe at Whistlebinkies. From the Edinburgh Fringe website:

“Begin your festival morning with Tim’s new, high-energy stand up show. Starting married life living on a canal boat, this laidback hippy panics – and takes a job as a mechanic. All to be viewed as a “proper married bloke”. Can this calamitous captain become a grease monkey? Or will his in-laws’ dubious scheme offer him a way out of the rat race? ‘Assured the audience they were in a for decent night’ (Chortle.co.uk). ‘A rare breed indeed. Great jokes among well-crafted stories’ (Indie Comedy Review).”

Starting the day with a completely lucky punt. I have no idea what to expect with Mr Biglowe but I like the sound of his set! With only 15 seats in the venue, I hope we can get in!

12:55 –  Gang Bang, Pleasance Courtyard.

“In 1945, when Sicilians were pouring onto boats for America, one man by the name of Don Lambrini accidentally boarded an all-inclusive Thomas Cook cruise to Blackpool, England. A mob comedy from the writer of Ringer, Out To Lunch, Goons, Frog’s Legs and Boondocks. ‘A name to look out for’ (Scotsman). ‘Quality new writing’ **** (BroadwayBaby.com). ‘A delight’ **** (VoiceMag.uk). ***** (EdFringeReview.com).”

The premise of this play sounds completely hilarious and I’m looking forward to seeing how the Mafia fare amongst the bright lights and subtle pleasures of Blackpool. Let’s hope the writing and performance live up to the idea!

16:15 – Emma Sidi Is Sue Gray, Pleasance Courtyard.

“Character comedian Emma Sidi is back at the Edinburgh Fringe. And now she’s Sue Gray. But who is Sue Gray? Well, she’s [REDACTED]. As seen on Starstruck, Ghosts and Pls Like. ‘Bonkers originality… A-grade stuff, invigoratingly fresh’ **** (Telegraph). ‘You will absolutely love it!’ ***** (BroadwayBaby.com). ‘Top-class character comedy from a comedian at the top of her game’ ****½ (ToDoList.org.uk). ‘A comic of considerable skill… a notch above many of her peers’ **** (Chortle.co.uk). ‘A show so good I wish I could binge watch it on TV’ **** (ThreeWeeks). **** (Skinny).”

As soon as I saw this listing I knew it was a must-see! Emma Sidi is new to me but the idea of an exposé on Sue Gray is comic genius.

19:00 – Chloe Petts: How You See Me, How You Don’t, Pleasance Courtyard.

“After two smash-hit, sell-out runs, Chloe Petts returns to the Edinburgh Fringe with a brand-new show… and this time she’s getting personal. Between her newly found trolls, oldly found school bullies, and an excellent relationship with her food tech teacher, Chloe Petts brings her trademark laddishness to tell you who she really is, all whilst her Head Girl badge glistens upon her chest. ‘Clearly a rising star whose name will soon be in lights’ **** (Evening Standard). ‘One of the most compelling young comics’ **** (Guardian). **** (Metro).”

Chloe Petts is one of those comedians on whom you can always rely to get exactly the right tone and content and I’m sure this will be a great show.

20:40 – Nina Gilligan: Goldfish, Just the Tonic Nucleus.

“Join multi award-winner Nina Gilligan for her hilarious hour of stand-up, Goldfish. Memory loss, health anxiety, goldfish-related trauma. Things you need to remember and the thing you can’t forget. As heard on BBC Radio 4 and voted Best Club Comedian (Chortle.co.uk), Nina is described as a ‘bolshier Mrs Merton’ (Skinny) and known as ‘a vivacious, life embracing performer, with a cheeky, ready wit’ (Scotsman).”

We saw Nina Gilligan for the first time at the Fringe two years ago and she was a complete hoot throughout. The description of her as a bolshier Mrs Merton is spot on.

22:40 – Finlay Christie: I Deserve This, Monkey Barrel Comedy.

“Money, followers, religiously forbidden relationships. Does Finlay Christie deserve everything he gets? At 19, he became the youngest-ever winner of the prestigious So You Think You’re Funny competition. His sketches and stand-up have been viewed over 200 million times on YouTube, his debut Edinburgh show OK Zoomer was nominated for NextUp’s Best Show award. TV includes 8 Out of 10 Cats and Stand Up Sketch Show. ‘Outstanding… he will be taking the comedy world by storm, catch him now while you can’ (One4Review.co.uk). ‘The voice of his generation’ (Chortle.co.uk).”

Here’s hoping we’re not all joked out by the time we get to see Finlay Christie’s new show because he’s a fantastic young comedian with a huge future ahead of him. I’m expecting we’ll end the evening on a high!

Review – The Comedy Crate Weekender, Northampton, 8th & 9th July 2023

Correct me if I’m wrong, gentle reader, but it’s six years since the Comedy Crate held their first weekend festival hosting Edinburgh Preview acts for the pleasure of Northampton audiences. It’s also the first year that Mrs Chrisparkle and I have been able to be present for both days – and it really is an incredible bargain – £40 buys you ten shows from a choice of twenty-five. Your comedy dollar stretches a long way here. 25 acts, 3 venues and loads of laughs. Everyone’s experience will be different, depending on their choices of shows – but here’s what we got up to!

Saturday 8th July

2 pm – Chloe Petts: If You Can’t Say Anything Nice (Black Prince)

I’d heard a lot about Chloe Petts, so was naturally intrigued to see for myself! And her new show is a very enjoyable hour where she examines how she’s a nice person but nevertheless she has anger issues. She’s clearly naturally funny, with an engaging persona even if at time she tries to deliberately put you against her – for example, I loved how she singled out “men who sit in the front row at comedy gigs” as being the worst of the worst, but she also says she hates her own fans – but with a fair justification. I loved her routines about therapists and football, and she has some brilliant material about catching the bouquet at a wedding. Still work in progress, as all these shows are, and it needs a little tightening up and refinement, but I’m sure this will be one to watch when it comes to the Pleasance Courtyard Edinburgh.

3.30 pm – Matt Bragg: Has Nothing Wrong With Him (Black Prince)

We’d seen Matt Bragg once before when he did a ten-minute slot in an otherwise car crash of a show at the Leicester Comedy Festival in 2019 and I picked him out then as One To Watch. Now preparing his debut tour, I can certainly agree with the title that Matt Bragg has absolutely nothing wrong with him at all, in fact this was a tremendously fluid, confident, and extremely funny hour. Mr Bragg’s accent puts you in mind of a younger Frank Skinner and the two bear fair comparison. Extremely engaging and likeable, he puts a fresh angle on some familiar themes, incorporating some excellent callbacks. I loved the story of the Japanese hating Grandad, and the idea of the type of people who name their wedding tables after places they’ve been on holiday – so true. To be honest, if you’re going to include a story about Auschwitz in a comedy routine it’s vital to nail it devastatingly, and that wasn’t quite there yet; the show also needs a stronger ending, but that will come. This isn’t an Edinburgh preview as such, although he is part of an Edinburgh mixed bill line-up that will definitely be worth seeing. I’m predicting Mr Bragg will go from strength to strength and be a big name in the future.

5 pm – Darren Harriott: Roadman (Charles Bradlaugh)

Much to my surprise this was the first time we’d seen Darren Harriott, although he already has a great reputation for stand up. Another very likeable and engaging personality, he has a relaxed but confident way about him that instantly puts you at ease and ensures you’re in for a good time. He explains how he has moved on from being a Roadman (Urban Dictionary is your friend) to being the real him. He also tells us about the ikkk – I think that’s the right spelling – which is the moment that you know that the person you’ve met has just turned you off bigtime for a minor etiquette transgression; look forward to one of the best callbacks of all time. He has some very enjoyable material about his experience on Celebrity Mastermind and why he is satisfied it will never get repeated on TV. When all his comedy ideas have gelled together this will doubtless be an Edinburgh hit at the Pleasance Courtyard in August.

7 pm – Thomas Green: End of Daze (Charles Bradlaugh)

A last minute replacement, Thomas Green is new to me although he’s been on the comedy scene for a few years now, and his show End of Daze, although not going to Edinburgh, is touring the country from September. And if you’re going to see the show, you’re in a for a treat. He’s an outstanding comedian, hugely likeable, a superb communicator, deftly incorporating all the little elements that an audience throws at him, and we didn’t stop laughing the entire hour. The show is based on his Australian upbringing within a very controlling and strict church and how he eventually broke free and became a teacher in Nottingham (where else?) Mrs C was brought up in Australia, and also knows a lot about the church there so there was lots to recognise. There are some lovely moments, like the first time he saw snow (?) and the first time he saw a radiator! Absolutely loved this show and will definitely seek him out in the future. Highly recommended! 8.30 pm – Josh Pugh: Existin’ La Vida Loca (Lamplighter)

Purely as an aside, you can’t beat Josh Pugh for coming up with inventive titles for his shows! Battling the extreme heat of the upstairs room at the Lamplighter, which Mr Pugh would be the first to agree was not the most conducive environment to enjoying comedy, he nevertheless treated us to some terrific comedy ideas that will go to form his new show which is scheduled to be a Work in Progress when it reaches the Monkey Barrel in Edinburgh for the early part of the Fringe. Josh is a terrific wordsmith and always brings new observations to familiar situations. His new show is about coping with all the stresses and strains of life now that he and his wife have a young child in the mix. Early days for this Work in Progress but I have no doubt that this will be another cracker on the way.

Sunday 9th July

2 pm – Mark Simmons: New Jokes (Charles Bradlaugh)

I’m a real sucker for Mark Simmons’ brand of comedy – rapid one liners, but delivered at a gentle pace. Trying out all sorts of new material for his Edinburgh show at the Liquid Room, what makes him so effective a comic is the brilliant contrast between his charmingly mild-mannered appearance and delivery and the sometimes savage content of his punchlines. There’s plenty of new examples of this in his new show, which of course I won’t spoil for you, but if you’re a fan of his previous work you’ll certainly love the new stuff. It’s not to everyone’s taste – one gentleman left early, much to the surprise of everyone else in the room, apart from Mark himself, who was kindness itself in accepting that his style isn’t for everyone. Shame – he missed out on some terrific stuff! When Mark’s decided on the final bunch of new jokes for Edinburgh, it’s going to be a blast!

3.30 pm – Ian Smith: Crushing (Charles Bradlaugh)

We’ve seen Ian Smith twice before, so I knew we were going to be in for a good time with his new show, Crushing, which he’s taking to the Tron (Monkey Barrel Comedy) in Edinburgh this year. Ostensibly about going with his hairdresser to smash a car up in Slovakia and watch it crushed by a tank – but there’s lots more to it than that. It’s a very funny collection of routines that are largely based on the idea of stress-busting solutions, plus the problems in life that create the stress in the first place. Mr Smith has a quirky, unpredictable style; there’s a sequence, for example, where he hosts the show from a spare seat in the audience. My favourite part was the story of the aggrieved employee in a vineyard who wrought a very protracted revenge on his employers. Loads of excellent comic ideas here, with a very strong delivery. It still lacks an ending, but as Mr Smith himself said, he still has three weeks….

5 pm – Matt Forde: Inside No 10 (Black Prince)

It’s been a terrible sin of omission, but is the first time we’ve seen Matt Forde, even though he has an outstanding reputation for impersonations and political comedy (of which we’re very fond.) He hits the ground running straight away with a comic assassination of Rishi Sunak (fully deserved, imho), and he weaves loads of other political figures into his narrative. I really enjoyed his bumbling, pompous Sir Lindsay Hoyle, his pinch-voiced Keir Starmer, his bewildered Hamza Yusuf, and his quietly manipulative Mick Lynch. Topical, gritty and pulling no punches on any side of the political spectrum, I didn’t think Northampton audiences normally responded particularly well to political stand up in the past, but this was an exception. He’s still working out which elements of this work in progress show will end up in his Inside No 10 show at Pleasance Courtyard next month, but he’s got a lot to choose from!

7 pm – Nabil Abdulrashid: The Purple Pill (Black Prince)

I’ve not seen Nabil Abdulrashid before and I wanted to see him on the strength of his appearance on Have I Got News For You a few weeks ago, where I thought he was devastatingly funny. There’s no denying he’s a big chap, which leads to a commanding presence on stage. His Edinburgh show description about The Purple Pill (Pleasance Courtyard) is that it is a “show about trying to be a good person while staying a badman.” I’m not sure that really reflects the material he delivered at this Preview, which I felt more concentrated on his family life, coping with two very different daughters, and needing to protect them from the big bad world outside, as well as his own mental health issues – no real detail there, except that he feels he has them, and has a lot of them. He’s a terrific wordsmith, with a tremendous lightness of verbal touch – he has a beautiful sensitivity to the nuances of the language. Occasionally challenging, particularly on the topic of latent racism, and it’s refreshing to hear about life from the point of view of a Muslim Nigerian in Croydon! Plenty of work still to do here, but I’m sure he’ll nail it.

8.30 pm – Abandoman: Future Fest (Black Prince)

I really ought to learn my lesson not to put my hand up in an Abandoman show. I did it at his Preview show last year – and ended up on stage; and I did it again this year, ending up on stage and dragging poor Mrs Chrisparkle into the show as well. Fortunately my fellow Abandoman victims – I mean stage participants – did outstandingly well! The thing about Abandoman is that he is so unthreatening, completely puts you at your ease whilst you’re up there, that you should never be wary of taking part in one of his incredible musical experiences. In Future Fest, (Underbelly, George Square) he poses just three or four questions to the audience, and if you feel you’ve got an appropriate answer, he’ll give you a little interview on stage and then convert all the material you’ve provided into a hilarious rap song. He must have the most extraordinarily flexible brain and memory, and I can only assume that no two Abandoman shows are ever the same. A brilliant way to end a superb weekend of comedy – and a massive thanks to the Comedy Crate team for organising it so splendidly and seamlessly.
